I feel that in her "hippie" days, she was still immature and confused about her childhood, and I agree with some of the things already said, she somewhat didn't feel worthy of such a good persons love. As she got older and more mature, she realized that they both deserved each other. They, well... made their child, several years before she called and said she had the disease, might mean that she didn't know at the time that she had the disease, but wanted to raise the child while it was young, which would've probably been quite hard for Forest. The fact that she called him after several years after they, well... made their child. I think, was simply because she didn't know how much longer she had, so, she wanted to give him what she knew, he's always wanted. A family with her.
