These Islands used to be called San Blas, but this is name is rooted in Spanish, catholic tradition and not the local culture.
The Kuna Indians living there had the name officially changed to Kuna Yala in the mid '80s, so this is the proper and politically correct way to refer to the area.
The same thing happens with the indidivual main islands. Each one has a Spanish name and a Kuna name. Use the Kuna name as much as possible!
The definition of the Kuna Yala "Comarca" or indigenous territory includes the mainland, but it's uninhabited.
