What is your opinion of Wal-Mart?

I find their stores dirty, the employees unfriendly, the produce and meat selection horrible and not fresh and the prices aren't really that good. I'm just wondering why they are still doing so well!

Walmart - a hangout for breeders, pimps, trashy people and the business stragety of Walmart is to wipe out any small Mom and Pop stores.

I used to say if Wal-Mart doesn't have it then I don't need it. These days, I can do with or without them. It used to be a easy to go there and do all my shopping except for meat. I refuse to buy meat there. I prefer to go somewhere that they have a meat market and I can get fresh meat. Plus I've seen WAL MART employees return meat to the shelf after it has been left in a buggy for goodness knows how long. SO EWWWW. Although Wal-Mart is cheaper on a lot of things, it seems that some things are never stocked. This has been the case for nearly 2 years here - since Hurricane Ivan.

The convenience they provide is what draws most people. You can do everything in one place. We even joked about having a church named Wal-Mart Church. That would probably be the largest Church in town. Get your oil changed while you are in church.

The Wal-Mart stores just went to the automatic pay system. If you pay with a check they run it automatically and return the check to you. I have a family member who despises this method because of a prior experience with it at another store. He had a check bounce, but after investigation it never even went through his bank. They marked him as a bad check writer in the CHECK-system and he and his wife couldn't write checks for 3 months to any other store that used the same check processing company. It wasn't a problem as far as paying for things, but it was an inconvenience. He realizes why the companies are going to this, but he feels punished.

And that's all I have to say about that for now I reckon.

I hate the small business crushing, politician bribing, jackasses because among all that other stuff, they don't give benefits to their employees, whom they guarantee are impoverished by making them work just an hour or two under the limit at where they'd have to pay health insurance. They also use strongarm tactics to get lower prices on stuff. Most of the problems you mentioned could be fixed by giving benefits to employees, raising wages, and buying at prices they negotiated fairly. However, this would raise the price. Wal-Mart only does well because they are everywhere, and often the only place in rural towns to get a lot of items (or to have glasses fixed or see a doctor etc.). Also, because they have almost every product ever made, they are one stop shopping for busy suburbanites who have to get junior to soccer practice and little Stephanie off to her ballet class.
They still suck.

When we got Wal-Mart in our town we lost Ames and K-Mart!! So now all we have is a Wal-Mart! I would like to have some choice in where to shop! I also think their meat is expensive, I can get meat a lot cheaper at Hannaford! My husband also worked there for a while and his paycheck was never as much as it should have been!

They ruin communities.

My community recently voted to block Wal-Mart from moving in and taking over. We value the small family business that Wal-Mart puts out of business more than we value the opportunity to buy cheap crap made in China. I would rather spend a little extra money to know that I'm not selling out my country.

Wal-Mart is just like any other store....there to gain power of the mighty ole dollar and take control....and its us the people AMERICA that give it to them, by shopping there....So, we should not blame Wal-Mart for wanting to rule the world...But blame America for giving Wal Mart the world. And whats so funny is that we work for free for them each time we use self-checkout...however, I still shop at wally world no matter what.....

I shop there for almost everything. When it first came to town many many years ago the workers were friendly and nice, now the workers are not so nice and there is a cold feeling. The one in my home town is kept clean, but when traveling I have been in a few that are just dirty.

Walmart only thrives because the market is there. If no one wanted a bunch of cheap goods in one location then they would have fizzled long ago.

But, would they actually thrive in a free market scenario? By free market I mean one truly free of restrictions and/ or interference by coercive forces. In a truly free market it is unlikely they would have access to people willing to work so cheaply to produce goods. I would even suggest that in a truly free society most markets would be decentralized so that these large corporations (who have gov't. permission to do business without taking personal responsibility) would be nonexistant. Indeed, minus the coercive element of government these "corporations" would just be people operating businesses and would be directly responsible for their actions just like the rest of us. They would no longer have government protection and subsidation.
