Lee (downwind) slopes are more likely to produce avalanches than are other slopes with equal incline because they receive much greater accumulations of dense, slabby snow. Lee slopes are found behind high ridges, fall line ribs, rows of trees, hills, convex parts of slopes, and gully walls. These slopes are the starting point for a lot of avalanches.
