I read this book more then 25 years ago. It is based loosely on an actual sailor who made it back to England after many years in Africa to retell his story.

This was not Robinson Cursoe. This sailor is shipwrecked or captured by pirates near South america. He eventually escapes and ends up in africa. I think it was in a Portugese settlement. He has much contact with cannebal tribes. When he is quite old he makes his way back to England to retell his story. It takes place pre-colonialism and is loosely based on a true story.
