I mean, it always is, even though the rest of the letters differ from chart to chart. (yes, I go to the optometrist a lot...)

E is the easiest letter to distinguish. People (small children) who cannot read or do not know the English alphabet can point which way the arms are pointing. Some charts show the "E" facing in different directions.

Our lab has a chat that begins with an A. I think it depends on the designer of the chart or perharps the letter 'E' is the most eye friendly!
