Any entity that has a monopoly on the dissemination of information to the masses will and should always be suspect. It is impossible to be an effective citizen and human being without the access to unaltered truth. When a select few individuals and corporations control the content and dissemination of information to billions of people world wide there are no adequate checks to ensure that these entities are ethical about how and what they inform people. Also the rubbing of shoulders between powerful leaders and owners of large media corporations can seriously compromise the information that the public is allowed access to. Enough is not known about the people behind the scenes and what their interests are and thus it is hard to trust the information they deliver on a daily basis. This information influences political elections, decisions to go and stay at war and general public opinion on a wide array of issues. An example would be Rupert Murdoch Chairman of NewsCorp. The News Corp holdings now include a lion's share of the newspaper industry in Australia, about one-third of British newspapers (including raunchy, intrusive tabloids and the Times) and BSkyB, which is now immensely successful. In the U.S. he has film and TV interests(Fox News and a host of others), newspapers(New York Post), book publishers(Harper Collins), sports teams, and much more. In Asia he has Star Television. In all, as many as one in five American homes at any given time will be tuned into a show News Corp. either produced or delivered. http://www.americanprogress.org/site/pp.asp?c=biJRJ8OVF&b=122948

Maybe because many people are not "media literate." There's an idea of "media literacy" -- if you understand how the news and entertainment media in your country work, and what the various alternative channels and options are, and how to use the Internet, etc., then you can usually figure out when the "official story" is a lie and when it is true. But if you are not "media literate," you may be ignorant about how to evaluate the sources of information that are available to you.

Maybe because they are unscrupulous ; bias & just plain invent the news . The general population at large is fed up with the media & the like-speaking for us . There is nothing sacred to the media ; if someone looses a loved one tragically , the media will camp out on your door-step;invade your privacy ;shove a mic in your face and ask you how you feel now .

I was interviewed by the media not long ago and I told them what was happening in regard to a kidnapping and information I had. They turned all my words around and wrote what they wanted. So don't believe everything you read and see on the news. They distort it and make the officials & gov't sound real good and the heck with the truth.
