According to classical physics 3: length, wideth and depth.
Modern physics add to that a fourth dimension - time.
Those we now for certain exist. But there could be more (as much as 10 or 11 according to superstring theory).

It depends upon what you are going to do with the answer. Usually XYZ can define the normal dimensions relevant to most peoples needs. However, for the sake of scientific inquiry any number of dimensions are possible. Like religion, science sometimes depends upon "belief and faith" more than science. Many scientist "believe there are 11 dimensions and others believe there are an infinite number of dimensions. ---if you take the normal XYZ intersecting planes and rotate or shift them some fraction in a random direction does that define a new dimension relative to the old dimension?

Hi :-)

In our everyday life, we-humans need 3 space-dimensions + 1 time-dimension - so a total of 4 dimensions - for describing the whole world we live in.

However, many scientists build theories according to which more than 4 dimensions are requested for describing the "everything".

There may be different kinds of dimension: quantified or not, folded or not, and so on. Many scientists studying fractals even consider there are non-entire dimensions: http://hypertextbook.com/chaos/33.shtml

Maybe there are much more than 4 dimensions, but we-humans are only aware of 4.

This reminds me of the Platon's allegory of the cave (see links below).

People don't like calling time a dimension because the point at which we exist in it (or perceive ourselves to exist in it) is always moving, but that's just panic. Time is a linear dimension. Space-time is the collective four dimensions we are able to perceive directly with our physical senses and beyond that, no-one knows. There could be infinite dimensions.

there are only 3 dimensions that we are aware of and can fully comprehend but speculations are that there are more...

the fourth dimension may be time as some people believe but i think that there are quite possibly many more spacial dimensions that exist but humans as 3 dimensinal beings can never fully understand them.

4: height, breadth, depth and time

physicists postulate on the existence of other dimensions but I feel that when we've sorted it all out, these nth dimensions will prove to be sublte extensions of the 4 standard dimensions
