I'm extremely surprised by that too, and English is not even my native language. I don't know who's to blame for that, I guess that everything you mentioned has an influence, but in my opinion the main reason for incorrect spelling is that people don't read as much as they should and therefore they don't get used to the correct forms of the written words.

I guess that I really enjoy helping people, so it doesn't bother me, usually. I did write to someone that it is rude to not be careful, but I continued to type. So, I answered the question to the best of my knowledge. This question was a concept in math at a n advanced undergraduate level. I did point out that I could have been MORE helpful if he had been more careful.
Usually, I don't want to make assumptions about a person's education level. I once helped a black man in his 50's with the computer catalog in the library. He couldn't spell trumpets, and was trying all kinds of creative spellings. THEN I realized the library was next door to a literacy center. I realized the courage it must take to learn to read at an advanced age. I'm not sure that I would be able to stand the frustration of such a daunting task. And I would have been embarrassed to approach a stranger for help with a computer. Imagine the learning curve, phonetics AND a computer terminal at the same time!
At least if they are kids, they are doing more writing than I did during my school years. I like to assume people do the best they can.
Also, I find this spellchecker frustrating!

I don't know why ppl don't use spell check, unless they're are using abbreviations for words, the stuff they type makes them appear stupid to others b/c they screw up on simple words. I guess they're in a hurry to get the 2 pts. and figure you will never meet them so why spell things correctly and make their answers look intelligent!?! No one is to blame but them

I don't use spell check, because I realy don't care if i spell a few words incorrectly, but I don't think my spelling is that bad. If I mispelled every word I typed then I might use it.

While I would STRONGLY recommend everyone use spell-check I am afraid we cannot always rely on it. I've found errors. Use an on-line dictionary.
I mentioned to someone in an earlier post, the public schools near my home are no longer "permitted" to correct student's spelling; it may hurt their self-esteem.

Everyone is to blame because teachers are not doing a good job at teaching the kids and parents are not really there for their child academically and the person is to blame because they not putting forth effort.

It's awful isn't it? I once asked a teacher at my kid's school the reason that her spelling wasn't up to scratch and she said she didn't have the time to check her workbook !! It dismays me as I have always been able to spell.

Every one. They are dumbing down the police requirement for reading and writing to the 4th grade level. Think of that next time you get pulled over.
