I am pretty sure that you are experiencing braxton hicks contractions. But please call your doctor to be sure. Here is some information regarding braxton hicks contractions:
What they are: Braxton-Hicks contractions are like a dress rehearsal — your uterine muscles are flexing in preparation for the big job they’ll have to do in the near future.
What causes them: Your pregnancy hormones are hard at work, sending messages to your body to (very slowly) start the process of childbirth.
What you need to know about them: Braxton-Hicks contractions can begin anytime after week 20 of pregnancy. (You’ll probably feel them earlier and more intensely if you’ve been pregnant before.) Braxton-Hicks contractions begin as a painless tightening of the uterine muscles, usually lasting about 15 to 30 seconds, but sometimes as long as two minutes, and causing your abdomen to become very hard and strangely contorted (almost pointy). Once you get closer to your delivery date, these contractions become more frequent and more intense.
What you can do about them:
Try changing your position during a painful contraction — if you’re sitting, stand up (and vice versa).
Use these contractions as a chance to practice your breathing and visualization techniques. (If your partner's around, make him practice, too.)
If your contractions are quite frequent (more than four in an hour) and/or you’re in a lot of pain or see any kind of vaginal discharge, call your practitioner.

Its called brackten hicks and yes it is very painful the closer you are getting to having the baby, I went threw it with my first baby.
You should make sure you talk to your doctor even over the phone.
Mine lasted three days with contractions before I had my first child, so if you have any doubt in your mind don't hesitate and go to the doctor to get checked.
Watch the clock and belly to how far the times are between your belly getting hard and then softening up, and if you are leaking any liquid from below just in case your water is leaking or if it has broken yet, that is why you should go to the doctor to get checked often.
It may also be how the baby is laying some woman carry babies out further and some babys sit further back, with my oldest I had a pinched nerve during the whole pregancy and it got worse towards the end.

*HUGS* I had the same problem when I was pregnant with both of my boys. There isn't really anything you can do about it, I remember my doctor telling me it's just a part of pregnancy and to basically stop whining. That p***ed me off! Just because you are pregnant doesn't mean you should have to go thru this!
This and all other bad pregnancy pains will go away as soon as you deliver. I used to sleep with a bottle of rolaids because I would wake up in the middle of the night with heartburn so bad. Then when my boys were born, it was gone. Weird!
All these pains are worth it, trust me. I know it seems like hell now, but keep your chin up. One day you will want to remember what it felt like to be pregnant. Write everything you are experiencing down, it's fun to go back and read it when your child is older. I kept journals and I read them every so often and it makes me cry.
Good luck Mommy. Hang in there!

i've had really bad back pain aswell during my pregnancy, gets so bad that i can't physically get out of bed i can't move or anything, my docs sent me to a physio and they gave me a back brace which is kinda like a boob tube. because when ur pregnant all ur muscles soften up and its harder on ur back to support the weight of u plus the baby, also if you where to go into early labor you would be feeling all the pain in ur lower back. the pelvic pains is probably because ur baby in head down in the pelvic have you also got sore groins? and getting sharp pains? because i get those aswell too the point i can not roll over in bed. BUT i am 37 weeks not 31 weeks soo altho i don't think you are really expeniceing early labor i think you should talk to ur ob or midwife or nurse.

I agree with your the other answers you have recieved. I would call the hospital where you are booked into and speak to the nurses they can advise the best cause of action. Meanwhile a hot water bottle can help relieve the pain. I had labour in the back and back problems with one of mine and this is the remedy I used it did help.Good Luck I'm sure all will be fine.

I agree with the others. You should call your doctor. Let him make the call as to what it is. Back labor is not uncommon, and at seven months you want to hang on to the little one a bit longer. Your doctor won't be angry if you bother him. That is what he is being paid for. Better safe than sorry. Call and see about going in to see him today.

The baby's position causes the back pain. It's not always a sign of labor...but some women with constant back pain do experience back labor. Check with your doctor.

it couldbe a number of things. have you called your doctor? the pelvic pain is probably the baby in a weird position. you may be having false lobor pains. call the doctor. it's ok to call them that's what they get paid for.
