Another suggestion -- I would perform this prior to taking the cover off the computer:

Right Click on My Computer
Go to Properties
If you have WinXP, click on the Hardware Tab, then click on Device Manager.
If you have Win2000 I believe it is the same process.
Look for you CD-ROM in the list.
Click on the Plus sign
If it has a yellow exclamation or question mark beside it, there is the possibility the CD is gone.
Right click on the CD-ROM and select uninstall.
Reboot your system and upon boot up look for a message that will indicate whether or not NEW Hardware has been installed. (you may or may not recv this msg)

If your computer is still under warranty, I'd suggest calling them and they will take you through some trouble shooting and then if the device still doesn't recognize a CD, they will either send you a replacement or have you take it someplace for service.

If your computer is out of warranty, check to see if your system would support a DVD-CD/RW device. If it does, I'd replace the old with one of these. There are numerous technical websites out there.

However, if you are not technically inclined, you may want to consider purchasing an external device where you just use a USB port to connect the device to your computer.

oftentimes an elementary reboot will therapy the problem. it quite is a threat that a cable is unfastened, yet no longer likely. If the CD tension opens and closes you recognize the potential cable is okay (they are puzzling to get rid of besides). sure, verify the IDE cable - the two ends yet don;t be shocked if it additionally isn't unfastened.

jus open ur cabinet and jus check whether the power cable and the ide bus r connected properly.. once u tighten them up, switch on ur computer and see whether its gettin detected.. if its not, then try the same thing 2 to 3 times.. if it still doesnt get detected then i guess ur software must've got corrupted

What kind of CD-ROM do you have?
Have you an original diskette for it?
If yes, run setup from your diskette,
if no, search for your driver in www.google.com
