You gotta know what the rhythum of the song is, i.e., if the band is playing an uptempo boogie woogie it would sound weird if you played an Irish 'Fife & Drum' beat! So you gotta talk to the band! That & prectice, practice, practice!

I started with a drum teacher. You can pick up sticks and develop coordination and independence on you own...maybe. But a good percussion instructor will give you a solid foundation. If you dont want to pay a teacher, there are hundreds of instructional videos out there. Good luck. I've been playing for over 25 years and have no plans of retiring.
