Throughout the ages there have been events that have shaped the world that we now know. Events such as the Agricultural Revolution, the Reformation, the Renaissance and the French and American revolutions have all played a part each in their own little way in moulding the society we now live in. However no event has had as far reaching consequences for future generations as the Industrial Revolution.
The topic for discussion in this essay is “The Industrial Revolution was the most significant event in the making of the modern world”. The term “modern world” refers to world we live in today including its politics, social class structure, economies, environment and technologies among many other things. This essay will outline the impact the Industrial Revolution had on creating the “modern world” and will therefore prove that the “The Industrial Revolution was the most significant event in the making of the modern world.”
The pre-industrial economy in England was very different to the post-industrial. The English economy was “dominated by fairly primitive agriculture and construction”1 as were most. Peter Mathias (1969) also refers to the fact that “technology in agriculture, industry or transport remained subjected to the interruptions of nature”2. There was an attempt to integrate technology into agriculture but however “frost, flood, gale, or calm the wheels did not turn”3. This led to an inefficient system and low productivity rates and therefore “not much shipping put out of port between October and March”4. The weather also meant that there was “not much work available on the land in bad weather in some of the winter months”5 and “building activity declined in the winter”6.
This all changed with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The exact timeframe of the Industrial Revolution is not known but T.S. Ashton, a historian, author, and former professor of economic history at University of London7 held the term “Industrial Revolution” refers to the period between 1760-18308. The term “Industrial Revolution” was however not coined until the second half of the 19th century by Friedrich Engels and Louis-Auguste Blanqui9.
The exact catalyst for the beginning of the Industrial Revolution is contentious and a topic of great debate. The Industrial Revolution was a result of “many fundamental, interrelated changes that transformed agricultural economies into industrial ones” mainly the nature of production10. It was a period during which England gradually moved from muscle and water power to more efficient mechanised power i.e. steam powered engines.
However, the long lasting effects of the Industrial Revolution aren’t just isolated to the industry as its name suggests. The Industrial Revolution also had socioeconomic, cultural and environmental impacts which helped form the world we live in. In fact the Industrial Revolution is considered to be so important in forming the modern world that it is comparable to the Agricultural Revolution in the Fertile Crescent in around 3000 B.C.E11.
Socioeconomic impacts of the Industrial Revolution were far reaching from population growth to social class structure from social control to working and living conditions.

Briefly, Industrial Development means all activities and infrastructure associated with the development of an industrial base to accommodate and service the extraction, removal and processing of nonrenewable resources.
Sustainable Development; development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts: the concept of "needs", in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and the future needs.
