No, its not embarrassing. What is embarrassing is, if like me, you live a five minute walk from the Mediterranean Sea, have your own pool, run your own swimming pool company and are 36 years old, and still cant swim !

There is nothing embarrassing about it! I have seen so many people come down to the Keys/Key West and brag on how excellent of a scuba diver and swimmer they are and the truth is that they are not. Knowing your limitations is a valuable asset and you are still young and just sign up for swimming lessons at a local swimming pool! Don't be ashamed and just have fun! It is not like you are going to try out for an Olympic swim team and you will probably meet some fun people to learn with you that have the same level of experience! :)

Some people never learn to swim. But it's always a good idea to learn. For example, when you have children at a later stage, they might need help in the water. Also, disasters can happen, so it's important to be a strong swimmer, even if you never use the ability.

Ask at your local pool about the quiet times. Also enquire to see if they have any lessons, as most pools do. It's not embarrassing because a lot of adults don't even know.

NO! Absolutely not!

But if it's bugging you that you don't swim so well, then it's still possible to do something about it. But there is no magic bullet, the only thing that works is practice.

The most important thing is to have confidence in yourself, and that's something that comes from inside you, not from other people. You build self-confidence by pushing your limits slowly, at your pace, setting small but achievable goals, and recognising your own achievement. And, also, not knocking yourself if you miss what you were aiming for - maybe you just set the bar too high.

If you have difficulty doing this for yourself, then ask someone to be your personal motivator (a friend, a professional, it doesn't matter - they're there to set goals for you and be a cheerleader. They don't have to be a swimmer themselves!).

And remember: you don't have to be an expert swimmer to have fun in the water. I've taught people to scuba-dive who doggy-paddled through their swim test (required by most scuba courses - for safety), and once they were under, they loved it!

So don't sweat it - neither fear nor lack of practice are good reasons not to do something. You can only get less fearful, and better at it. You have nothing to lose. All the best!

It's never too late to learn how to swim...I believe that's covered in many of the other answers.

Personally, I could swim before I could walk. I taught swimming for many years and when I met my best friend he couldn't swim and for years was embarassed to go to the pool with me. I offered him free lessons, eventually he accepted. At the time he was 17. We don't live in the same state anymore, but we're still good friends. I heard from him recently and he's going to take his 3 month old daughter to the pool soon so she can get used to the water. I'm proud of him.

Another friend I just started giving lessons to just last year, he's 28 years old.

It's an important thing to learn, and you're never too old to do it.

Not at all, it just may be that you have not found the style you like yet, i would try them all, then when you find a style you like, practice at this the most, and you will improve. Also you will find as you improve your other styles will start to improve and benefit from the intial one, hope it helps :) It also does not matter what people think, swimming can be difficult and takes time to learn, it shows courage to admit that your not a great swimmer yet, keep going and soon, i think you will find that you are a good swimmer and will be beating your friends when they least expect it. Never keep up, it is always worth keep going at something difficult.

never be embarrassed by anything you do that you think you do not do WELL --- that you do AT ALL shows you are a true TRIER -- all humans CAN swim --- they are created in a water envirioment in mothers womb --- but after birth many have a fear of drowning

i have taught many men in 30 s and 40 s to swim and they were very scared

all people can hold breath and by this --- all can FLOAT

once you understand this --- you have no fear of water

take deep breathe--- put face in water --- and " FLOAT "

i admire you greatly as i believe you have learnt self to swim but still with a fear of water

this is so brave and honourable -- not an enbarressment

now --- follow my simple FLOAT INSTRUCTION

and you will see then that " WITHOUT FEAR " you will develop you swim skills automatically

my sincere best wishes --- brave person

yours

Think about it. Is it better to swim badly or not at all. I think swimming badly will save your life over someone who can not swim at all. Enjoy, Swim badly, Have Fun!

Depends how easily you are embarrassed.
Im 17 and am a terrible swimmer. I do dog paddle and if pretty much cant swim to save myself.
But if someone laughs at it I laugh too! cos it IS pretty funny.
But i suppose if ur one of those sensitive people then get some swimming lessons or avoid water.

If it's competittive for a team or club I don't think it's that big of a deal because I'm 14 and this past winter I just joined the team. My best times were 1:22.19 for 100 back, 31.34 for 50 free, 35.27 for 200 back medly relay split time, 30.67 for 200 free relay split, 1:20.16 400 free relay split and 1:23.43 for 100 free. But then again I'm a really bad and slow flip turner so that's probably brought the times down a lot.
