It is not the specific quantity of alcohol that constitutes an alcoholic. There are other signs: in what situations does the person drink? does the person often drink alone? does the person feel a strong need to drink? One drink a day can indicate alcoholism, while someone who drinks more every day may or may not be. Alcoholism is related to psychological as well as biological factors--if you're concerned about it, talk to an MD or psychologist.

When it becomes a problem.

Alcoholism is not only an addiction by quantity, but also by reasons of coping. The behaviour behind it is instead of dealing with problems and stress in a healthy manner, it is quickly remedied by drinking, and usually in large quantities.
When it starts to affect your work/school, friends, and family it would be constituted as alcoholism. Before you know it your life is in complete disaray. That would be a great time to seek help.

In quantity wise: I say 3-4 drinks daily on a occasional basis per week= ok.
8-10+ drinks daily per week= problem

The body becomes accustomed to the alcohol and as it does the person needs to consume more and more until the body cannot function without the alcohol. When the alcohol controls the person..then the person has become an alcoholic. Alcoholics vary in degree of dependency. Many will deny they are addicted. Contact the local AA or Alanon in your community, they are very helpful.

i don't think it has to do with amounts per week. i'm a recovering alcoholic (been just about 5 years) and i would go days without a drink but when i got into it i did not know when to stop. and not knowing when to stop was the major factor in me realising i was a drunk. some poeple are easily addicted and some are not. just like everything there is a time and a place for a drink.

There isn't a magic number. When you can't go a few weeks without one...you're an alcoholic.

there is no figure on this. an alcoholic cannot have one drink.
you must ask yourself are you dependent on that one drink. DON'T DRINK FOR 4 WEEKS AND SEE HOW YOU FEEL
