Peristalsis is an involuntary movement of the smooth muscle layer in the alimentary canal. It occurs whether you eat or not. The purpose of it is to move the food to the lower levels of the digestive tract and eventually removing the unused food (feces).
It makes no difference if you eat sitting or standing on your head. The food, once it is in the grip of peristalsis, will move in one direction only. Of course if you eat somthing that is harmful to you like too much alcohol reverse peristalsis occurs and you vomit.

no... peristalsis is defined as a gentle, wave-like motion that propels food thru the alimentary canal to the stomach, where the food is broken down into usable components for the body, and the rest is pushed out as waste. The stomach churns, but it's a totally different movement.

peristalsis is a wave like muscular contractions of the tubular structures of alimentary canal or other tubular structures.this process helps substances move towards the required region by force.and u know that stomach isn't a tubular structure right?
may be u r confused with the pounding process of food in the stomach by rugae which is a muscular structure in the inner lining of stomach .

Peristalsis does not occur in the stomach itself. The stomach has rugae lined in the inner epithelium which helps move food into the small intestine.
