mitochondria is in the cell and is used for anerobic respiration. the cell uses mitochondria for energy (ATP)

The mitochondria is also the "power-house" of the cell .It mainly produces ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), which is the only energy usable by the cell. Its function is to produce energy through Cell Respiration. And Cell Respiration takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell, then will pass inside the Mitochondria. It then goes into the inner membrane and into the matrix. Without the Mitochondria, ATP will not be produced by animals, like us and we will have no energy to use.

Mitochondria are the cell's power source.

Mitochondria: Architecture dictates function: http://cellbio.utmb.edu/cellbio/mitoch1.htm
"Mitochondria are the cells' power sources. They are distinct organelles with two membranes. Usually they are rod-shaped, however they can be round. The outer membrane limits the organelle. The inner membrane is thrown into folds or shelves that project inward. These are called "cristae mitochondriales". This electron micrograph taken from Fawcett, A Textbook of Histology, Chapman and Hall, 12th edition, 1994, shows the organization of the two membranes."

According to Cells are Alive: http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/mitochon.htm
"Mitochondria provide the energy a cell needs to move, divide, produce secretory products, contract - in short, they are the power centers of the cell. They are about the size of bacteria but may have different shapes depending on the cell type.

Mitochondria are membrane-bound organelles, and like the nucleus have a double membrane. The outer membrane is fairly smooth. But the inner membrane is highly convoluted, forming folds called cristae. The cristae greatly increase the inner membrane's surface area. It is on these cristae that food (sugar) is combined with oxygen to produce ATP - the primary energy source for the cell."

The mitochondrion is a sausage shaped body with an internal membrane and an outer one.The outer membrane is made up of a semi-liquid,matrix.The inner one is folded into a cristae. These contents contain enzymes which enable the mitochondria to carry out aerobic respiration. The energy released during this process is used cellular activities.
