Should I use AP Style for my novel and include arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) or all written numbers - for example: twenty-three?

For a novel, I would think you'd want to follow MLA style, which (if I remember my school days correctly) spells out all numbers that can be spelled in two words or less and uses digits for others. (i.e. "one hundred" but "101")

AP would be a better choice for non-fiction works.

But, actually, I think at the manuscript stage most editors just want to see that you're consistent with the style you've chosen. If what you're doing doesn't work for them, they'll ask you to change it before it gets to publication. If you're more comfortable with AP, do it that way to start.

Hiya! There is a protocol for numbers. You "spell out numbers of one or two words or those that begin a sentence. Use figures for numbers that require more than two words to spell out." (Pg. 412, The Bedford Handbook for Writers, By Diana Hacker) This handbook was and still my saving grace throughout college (English degree.) Happy writing. It's fun!
