Muscles have probably been strained, ligaments sprained, possible trauma to the tendons. Sometimes the peroneal nerve can be irritated. Microtrauma to the blood vessels will cause bruising. A very bad sprain can also cause bone damage/fractures.

No systems... My guess would be he , depending on the location of the swelling, has sprained talo-fibular joint, if the swelling is on the inside or the lateral(outside) lateral malleolar tendon. He could have an avulsion fracture, depending on the severity of the sprain, which causes a "chip" to be pulled off of the bone where the tendon attaches to the bone itself. These are more prevalent on lateral sprains and hurt like the devil, requiring immobilazion of the ankle in a cast for 3-4 weeks.

Sprained? that is probably a tendon problem...those are not life threatening...but they do take a while to heal....and most likely that jogger will have ankle problems in the future....as for the pothole...did the city cover it up after the accident?
