Indian yogis are the one who know how to answer this best.

Being aware of yourself means being aware of all the things going on in your conscious and unconscious minds. It takes years of practice.

For example, practice just being aware of yourself. This means sort of splitting yourself into two--the watcher and the watchee. Make a decision to watch yourself and to smile all day. What happens is that you forget yourself, you forget to watch, and occasionally throughout the day you may "wake up" and start watching, then you forget and go back to sleep, so to speak. After a few years of watching yourself, you may be able to keep doing it for about an hour without falling asleep or forgetting.

Yoga. You acting out postures/asanas on a yoga mat is how you act out off the mat. Paying attention, focusing without judgment {letting go of judgment must be learned} is how self awareness is developed/learned. This encompasses self awareness through experiential anatomy to your essence - your soul. This an ever evolving process.

reflect on yourself. talk to yourself, it may sound crazy but of course do that in private and not to loud. like if you are in your room. the only way to know a friend is by talking to him/her, so i think it also applies to your self. befriend yourself. that aint bad.
