2001 ford taurus GEM MODULE REPLACEMENT?

not keyless entry . multifunction module . does it have to be from a 2001 or can it be from a 2000 or even earlier model ? I have the SES series Taurus .

i think yes but if equipment levels differ it will have to be flash programmed for your cars Vin number for correct operation , this can be accomplished by the dealer only.
