The main reason is that the images are not updated too often. When I looked up one of my old addresses, it still showed empty fields even though an entire subdivision had been built there for 3 years.

It takes a lot of effort and time to update an entire country's detailed maps. It must be tens of millions of photos that have to be taken, downloaded, provided to the different earth imaging companies, then incorporated into their public databases.
