I found this big as a frying pan common green/yellow water turtle in a part of town that's not only full of traffic but away from any source of water. He was very dry and libel to get run over... I almost ran him over myself. I took the turtle to the nearest pond and chucked him in. My question is, how did he get in this apartment complex? Could he have walked that far and away from water? Why? My best guess is that some stupid kid or person tried to take him as a pet and changed their mind without being responsible enough to take him back where they found him.

It's too bad you couldn't take him in with you. I know taking it to the Vet would possibly have set you back on Cash, but I wonder if it kept itself nourished.

You're right, someone might have left it there, or maybe it DID belong to someone, and it might have run out on them, who knows? I hope all is well for it's sake.

It was very nice of you to deliver it to a safe spot.

You either found a slider or a cooter... the size indicate it is a female and it was likely looking for a laysight. They can walk for 1-2 miles looking for a suitable laysight. I hope she has laid her eggs or else she will have to make the trip again. The best thing to do is let them do their thing and make sure they are safe.

If you are helping a turtle across the road, move them in the direction they are going. if it is heading away from water do not return her to the water. She'll come right back. She is not lost, but looking to lay. Aquatic turtles come on land only to lay eggs. It's egg laying season right now and there are tons of turtles walking around and getting picked up by people who want pets or get runned over.

I doubt it is a kid who brought it this far... the female would have peed all over the kid and tried scratching them with the back legs.

Sometimes turtles move away from water. It could have been a female burying eggs or something. We found a turtle at my mom's house in the country, and she's not near any water. There's a stream nearby, but quit a long walk for a turtle. We let her be because she was very afraid of us.

he could have been someone's pet and got out or some body just decided to be mean and take him away from water and leave him there or he just took a very long walk

Turtles move from pond to pond sometimes traveling at great distances. They are territorial, but sometimes they just want to move away.
