You can download arena which is the best free user interface and a freeware beta version of rybka which is the strongest chess engine which can run on a pc from www.rybkachess.com.
Rybka currently leads all chess engines which run on personal computers based on matches between them. The biggest problem with Rybka is that you will need to play like Kasparov to have any chance against it.
If you want something commercial go to www.chessbase.com

Free chess software? What do you mean, like a free chess program? If you find one, it won't be very good. I love chess and when I play, which isn't often, I play on yahoo's server. I do have software, but it is Chessmaster. Now, I have seen certain sites that offer really basic formats. These include simple endgames, and very novice instruction, but as far as free software, you won't find much, for any platform, not just XP. If you are looking to play, let me know. Like I said, I love to play just not as often as I like.
I will say this, Chessmaster 10th edition is a good program for the money.

One person has already suggested Arena and that is a great suggestion. Technically, Arena is only an interface, so you have to download a chess engine with it. I previously downloaded the version with the Spike chess engine attached. Spike is so strong, I consider myself lucky to get a draw against it and I'm a ranked expert in the USCF (U.S. Chess Federation). Doesn' t matter which chess engine you download with Arena (Rybka, Spike, Crafty, etc.) they are all plenty strong. It is not necessary to buy commercial software anymore to get a strong chess program.

The bet one I've used, and one that uses the least amount of memory is Ävast V4.7 - it also detects and cleans viruses and trojans that others like AVG don't find. Hope that helps. Also, Nortons is very memory hungry and slows your computer down heaps.
