i work in a large factory that operates 24/7/365. i've been on graveyard shift for almost 30 years and love it. pay is regular day salary plus 12% shift differential. its nice because all the big wigs are gone, its quiet, i'm left alone to do my work, i go home in the morning while everybody is madly racing to work. i'm electronic tech, i fix machines.

Depending on where you live they may or may not be the following types of jobs.
A call center, restocking selves at store nights (that is not open to the public at night) would be the safest option. I wouldn't say it is fun but many places offer a 2nd or 3rd shift differential of 50 to 75 cents more an hour for working those shifts. I work at a call center and it pays nearly as well as my former Executive Assitant job.
Other night jobs are working at a hotel or convenience store, but both have the downside that they may be robbed. Some restaurants are open 24 hrs a day but they usually don't pay well unless you work Friday and Saturday night when it is busier when the bar crowd goes to breakfast after the bars have closed, but can also be a hassle dealing with drunk people.
Some factories have jobs at nights also and the pay can range from minimum wage to a good wage; depends on what they make and where you live. They sometimes pay a shift differential also.
The upside to working the graveyard shift is that you will be able to run errands during the day (going to dentist, doctor, etc.) that you might otherwise have to take off work for or if you have kids and they are in school, you can sleep during the day but be available to pick them up if they are sick (which means you will get little or no sleep) and go to their school functions. Some places relax the dress code at night and there things are less political that they are during a day shift.
The down side to working a graveyard shift is that you usually will have lunch by yourself in the dead of night and will wreak havoc on your social life. For the job itself, you are more likely to get stuck on something and have no one around that knows the answer and you either have figure it out on your own or get into hot water for not knowing something you have never been trained on but they think you should know.

Almost any job in a hospital has night shift positions. The great things about them are: No political BS to deal with, the big wigs only work during the day, usually you don't have to work as hard as in the day shift hours, and you get paid more to turn your life upside down to work at night.

I work at night in a jail, it needs to be staffed 24 hours a day. The pay is good, but you never get used to sleeping during the day, and you're always tired. My dream job would be the best night job of all, searching the heavens all night long, as an astronomer.

Most Security Guard jobs are at night. The work is usually easy and you have plenty of time to read or study if you are a student. The pay and benefits aren't usually very good, though.

I work third shift security. It's easy and pays $9/hour. No benefits but it is easily going to be the easiest job I will ever have.
As a matter of fact, I am working now.
