A good solution for you would be to get over depression as you work. Take up a job that is very basic and extremely routine, such as packing (or packaging) that does not need concentration on details. There might be a target for you to complete a certain number in a given time. Break up the long time to shorter time spans and challenge yourself to complete the work before time. You will succeed within say a week or so. But as you do the routine, build a breathing rhythm of deep inhales and exhales. Try this work for a couple of months to keep your mind off from what depressed you. Then take up a slightly higher job where you need to concentrate. Remember, breathing exercise will keep your mind from being the monkey.

Also your suggestion of working in a social organisation is very good. But not full time. You need to live your life too! You need to come out of the shell you are in and see the beauty there is to see in the world.

Good luck!

I think you should concentrate on healing your depression first. That way, the one big thing that's holding you back won't be there anymore. I'm almost in the same boat as you. I'm on SSI for my panic disorder and want to work SO bad. I know I've got to concentrate on getting past my phobias first, though, before even ATTEMPTING working somewhere or going to school. Take care of your health first. Then look into computer classes that could launch a career you'd be interested in. Good luck!

Get your depression under control first. See a psychiatrist that is able to prescribe medications, (a psychologist cannot) It may take a few months before the right medication for you is found, don't give up hope. Controlling your depression will also help your personal life. Attend meetings of depression self help groups such as MDDA if you are in the USA.

Depression is a serious illness! It is HARD to function, I know! But the best thing you can do is to help others! It helps you by knowing that you are of worth. It also keeps your mind off of your own problems.
