No, rats will only eat when they are hungry you should be sure to keep their food dish full at all times though because they have a very fast metabolisim and need to eat constantly throughout the day.

Not if they have a really big cage, in Autumn they'll stash food for winter and it'll go off. Not if your feeding the right kinds of food, they'll get fat on sweet biscuits and cakes.
I used to feed mine ad lib and they never got fat. but they were fed from tiny pots scattered all over the cage, some they had to climb to. I fed;
Main diet;
Water and mineral lick always available,
Rat chow
Cat biscuits - to keep their teeth in good condition
tinned or pouch pet food
Snacks;
small hard boiled egg with the shell just cracked but not peeled
Raw carrot and apple
small amounts sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hazelnuts and pecans in the shell
whole sunflower seed heads
Offer different foods in rotation to give variety in their diet.
Bored animals east more to fill the day so make sure they have plenty of space, a regular trip out, hiding places, tunnels and things to climb. I built my rat cage out of an old wooden wardrobe, added shelves and ropes and stuff, it was miles better than some tiny cage. In the wild rats territory extends for a one mile radius.

most definitely like with any animal there's always the potential for over feeding however rats seem to only eat what they actually need

Yes you can overfeed. Although as long as they have plenty of exercise you shouldn't have any probs.
Cat biscuits are a NO NO for rats as they have too much protein in them and rats will have very bad reaction if They get too much. Dog biscuits are OK though as a treat occasionally.

Yes you can and this can lean to all sorts of trouble, like tumours and other lumps, due to the stored fat. This is a common problem in girls rats.
Feed them 1 a day with fresh very or fruit and always leave a small amount of dry food for them.

Yes cos they`re gready and will just eat and eat, feed them twice a day and if they leave any take it away so they can`t have the snacks all day. rats should be eager for there food when its time.
