I am not sure if I posted this in the right category but can someone explain to me what the deal is with deja vu? What causes the brain to recognize familiarity in something that is new?

When I get deja vu it's pretty intense. I just had it (inspired me to ask the question) when I was looking at my Q&A page on here. I've been on Yahoo answers for about a week now but it felt like I had dreamed of looking at the page in this exact environment and atmosphere.

One explanation I've heard is that the brain is storing the present into memory so quickly, we perceive it as happening in the past.

There are also the theories of parallel universe travel or having dreamt something very similar to the present.

it is due to the internal reflection of light as the air is very hot in deserts.
as the hot air rises up and coolair settels down soon a point comes when due to the difference in the desity of cool and hot air the light reaches the point of internal reflection in it the light instead of being refracted through the different air mediums is reflected back on the ground and so we see a reflection of the blue sky on the ground, thats it. since the image is roughly focoused due to ever chaning density of air the image is diminished and we see a deja vu of moving water. it even happens in cold areas.

I dunno, I think it's when you do certain things... l ike are in a certain position and you have done something quite similar to that for a split second. I'm a sushi chef and I got deja vu in my new restaurant... but I remembered the exact sitauation that I was remembering... when I was standing just like that cleaning my cutting board in the old place. I tihnk you've done it before, but i dunno.

It is cause by neurons taking a shortcut. Also memories are not that sharp so similar things tend to blend together.
