I live in Asia, and the TV advertisements teach people to clean and dry out any container holding water at least twice a week. People here are very wary of mosquitoes and the diseases they carry. It's a real problem.
But, keep thinking ~ you never know what you might invent! You obviously have a creative mind...
good luck...

there is a device known as a midge trap or something: it emits carbon dioxide and heat (the main midgey attractants). I don't know if they work for mosquitoes. Although this may not stop them laying eggs, as when they want to lay eggs they are attracted to water. Maybe put a net over your water butt as well.

Sir, with respect, I think a tray full of water would hardly save the world from these insects.

come on holiday with me...they just love me, i lose a stone in weight every time i go from blood loss.
my dad puts a bird bath on top of his water butt, then empties it every day in the summer. They like stagnent water so use the water butt water for it...doesnt seem to affect the birds which is good.

mosquitoes are attracted to heat and carbon dioxide.
p.s. the above is true only for the females, because they are the only ones that suck blood. the males drink plant juices.
