Well, yes. Most of the scripts are written with the male interpretation (or fantasy) of how a woman would think, speak, feel, react. It is usually based on his interaction or a story he heard...and many time this is just not reality...but then when a woman script writer sells her script, she is writing about her perception, and or fantasy of how the guy operates. Woody Allen, before his fall, made a lot of fun with this. It's a two way street, but I think that the male perception gets more view time on the silver screen. Example? Here in India, I saw a poster for an English movie called "The Last American Virgin!?" That was shocking for me (an American.) It must be a B production.

Women writers are increasingly claiming their place as writers in movies and are bringing more of their own perceptions to the screen. Most scripts are actually written, and then re-written by other writers -- often rewritten many times and by many other writers -- who never receive credit. Movies with significant female roles are often given to female writers for their attention to female characters.

The actresses who play the roles also usually have some input, called "script approval." This means they can also have changes made to a script if they find something that is not quite right.

Good writers are usually more sensitive to how other people or other genders think and will use their observations about people in their writing. They also seek out information on just what the differences are in the way genders think and react... one example is at the link below.

Ultimately, all characters serve the purpose of the story being told, and all people have both male and female characteristics, so anything is possible for any character.
