Originally, humans did not eat animals. It was not until after the flood of Noah's time did he tell them they may eat animals. And later, in the Mosaic law, God gave specific laws on how animals were to be treated. They did not suffer unnecessarily, and they were not to be abused.
Animals raised for food today are abused, unmercilessly. They have to be given massive doses of antibiotics just so they can survive the unnaturally filthy conditions in which they are raised.
Many of them do not survive transport to slaughter due to exposure to extreme weather and temperatures, and due to overcrowding in the trucks.
The meat industry of today is not what God had in mind when he gave us animals to eat.

You've obviously never had a pet. They feel pain, they have emotions, language, rituals, and rites of passage.

If you can feel sorry for a human in pain, you can feel sorry for an animal's pain, sometimes even more so, as they can be so much more noble than us. We have much to learn from the beasts.

But they're still tasty.

Animals have other purposes than to feed the human race. We can survive off of a fully vegetarian diet but we choose not to. If we ate only meat, we would eventually die of malnutrition.
