NO! Type in "year round schools" and you will find lots of research has been done and there is no definitive research to support either side. It is not true that kids "forget" over the summer. In truth, if they "forget" they didn't really know it to begin with.

One person mentioned the inner city so kids won't get in trouble, well, guess what: WE AREN'T BABYSITTERS. Besides, trust me, kids from anywhere can get in trouble anytime of the year.

This is my second year on a modified year round. Instead of 3 weeks off, 9 on, we are off 2 weeks in Oct., 2 in Dec. and 2 at Easter. That gives us an extra 2 weeks in the summer. Although I like the two weeks at Christmas, which we always got, what do I do in Oct.? My family is at work and in school. Oh, I know, I can go to teacher training within the district or teach an intersession "summer school" like class. It has been really hard to get a vacation in with my kids being on a different schedule than me. In the end we are only starting about 3 weeks before the other schools around here but it is the hottest 3 weeks of the year and we don't have air conditioning. The kids (and their parents) act like it's still summer so the kids stay up late and are exhausted the next day. They complain that they could be swimming or doing other things. Parents keep their kids home to take them to the amusement park and to go swimming or a family reunion. They miss more school for that.

It is harder for kids to find a job in the summer. It is harder for teachers to get a job in the summer or to take classes. We are required to take 20 hours of professional development a year. The local colleges run into August so we can't take the classes there. That means we have to take them in the evening and weekends during the school year when we are tired and our kids have extracurricular things going on that we have to try to work around.

Most of you know how crazy kids get at the end of school every year. Guess what? When you are year round, they get crazy in Oct. Dec. and Easter! I haven't seen any benefits yet. I vote NO!

I am torn between this issue. I am a soon to be elementary school teacher. In the area I live in, all schools receive a summer vacation of just about 3 months. I can see the positve and negative sides of year-round schooling and I can also see the positive and negative sides of school with a summer break. I think it would be wonderful for students to have the opportunity to be learning year-round. Having 3 months off is a long enough time for students to get into the slump of not working hard and being lazy. However, on the downside of this, students and teachers need time away from the school setting. I think this topic would make for some interesting research. I wonder what the findings would be if it was tested on student and teacher perfomance for year-round schooling vs. school with a 3 month summer break. Good question.

It doesn't matter, actually. In urban settings, it makes sense. A large number of kids let loose for three months with very few places to go, and few things to do...of course they should go to school all year. It gives them something to do in a safe setting, taking some pressure off of the teachers to compress a lot of instruction in a small amount of time.

In a rural setting, this sets the students up for failure. There are still a great number of communitites that NEED their children to help on the farm during the summer time...telling the families that their children will have to give up working for these precious months means that the farm will lose a lot of productivity, or more likely, the student will drop from school.

Add in that some teachers need the summer break for further education, that it is difficult to keep the schools cooled during these months in some localities, and that working summer jobs is a wonderful learning experience for teenages, and the answer I have to give is...depends on the situation.

Yes I am. I am currently a graduate student. I think all year school is great. I think this would give more time for students to lern new material, and the teaching can be done at a slower pace. This will help to solidify the material. It is also a great way to prepare kids for the future in the workplace, where you have barely any breaks.

One problem is that, students are not able to work inthe summer, which kinda sucks. But overall I think its a great idea.

No.

I recall with great love the days of my schooling, and when summer came around, it was a time of pure joy. I would hate to remove that from the children of today. Everyone needs a nice big break from school, a chance to get out, to bond with others outside of school, to have life experiences.

I like it as it is without the year around aspect.

Hope that this helps.

ABSOLUTELY!
We were lucky enough to live in a school district that did it. Since I was a new dad, it was not big, TRAUMATIC, thing. AS for my children, they loved it. The best part is they are never out of school long enough to develop bad habits or lose the good ones.
