If your standard is "number of movies", none of the big ones are even close. Tom Cruise has done 30 movies, Tom Hanks has done 36 and Rober De Niro has done 69 movies (these are all not counting movies in production, television and video game appearances). To get a really high number, look at character actors who may not having starring roles but appear in everything under the sun for decades on end. When you do that, you get some of the following people:

Michael Caine -- 103 movies
Gene Hackman -- 82 movies
Harry Dean Stanton -- 99 movies

The all-time champ, however (as certified by Guiness Book of World Records) is John Wayne who appeared in 153 movies and was the star of 142 of them. Considering this was over a 49 year span, Hanks and Cruise have a LONG way to go before they equal his number.

I would say the most celebrated actor in Hollywood is Jack Nicholson. Robert de Niro is highly considered too, although he has lost some aura recently for appearing in movies like Showtime or Meet the Parents.

Anthony Hopkins is a biggie. Russel Crow is also a favorite. They are newer then say "Burt Lancaster" or "Charlton Heston". If you want comedy you can go with Dan Akyrod, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler. I don't know if I'd say that Bruce Willis is celebrated. He had a good streak of luck but he's about done now. I'd say Hopkins is the front runner or even Sean Connery. Good luck.
