In the US, they are equipped with limiters that put them at something like 185 or 189 mph.
Some bright boys have figured out to get around this limiter and have pushed the things up to the mid-220s.
Now consider ... each tire has a "contact patch" of tire on the road about the same size as a Milky Way bar (or some other candy bar, but personally, I like Milky Ways). Times two (for that all-important second wheel) and you get a contact with the road equal to about a slice of Wonder Bread (yeah, I know I gots plebian tastes, plus I haven't had breakfast yet).
Okay, with me on this?
Now rider and bike combined have a total weight in the neighborhood of 650 pounds (depending on what I had for breakfast ... see the pattern?).
So you're tearing into an "S" turn at 185 mph (or 223 mph), balanced on your slice of wonderbread, trusting in the Gods of Stickiness that your 650 pounds of inertia will remain in contact with the road, despite all of Sir Isaac's predictions that it will continue in a straight line into the stone wall, right?
Now, at 189 mph (223 mph) you are traveling a mile every 15-20 seconds (a football field or more every second!) ...
Okay, here comes the really good part ...
Now 100 yards ahead of you, Mr. Bunny T. Rabbit wanders onto the tarmac.
You are healed over at 45 degrees, praying to the Gods of Stickiness (I mentioned that, right), trusting in Wonder Bread and grinning like a monkey inside your skullbucket. You have one second to decide how to evade/elude/escape impact with the rodent and survive to tell the tale.
What do you do? Quick quick qui ... too late.
Why, you die, you silly hooner, you. Whoever heard of doing 189 (223) on a public roadway?
And that's how fast the Hayabusa is.

I asked a similar qustions a few days ago and got a really good answer. 1999-2000 Suzuki GSX-1300R Hayabusa will do 195-200 mph stock. Fastest street legal Hayabusa' have top speeds at around 261 mph. [non-nitrous] The 2001-2006 versions are limited by chip to 186 mph, but can be modded quite easily to by-pass this limit.

Here's the answer I received on the question of fastest motocycle:

quote: "Fastest production bike is still the 1999-2000 Suzuki GSX-1300R Hayabusa at 195-200 mph.

Fastest street legal bike is a 2002 Suzuki GSX-1398R Hayabusa Turbo at 261 mph and produces 711 horsepower. This is 209 horsepower more than a Boss Hoss 502, using and engine 4 times smaller than the Boss Hoss's Chevy V8.

Fastest non-production is the Fueling Advanced Technologies bike at 332.103 mph average or 370 mph top speed.

Other noteworthy bikes are the MTT Turbine at about 225 mph, but it is not considered production according to the manufacturer. Also, the Dodge Tomahawk use a V10 Viper engine but has a top speed of less than 200 mph. I could not find any official records of Boss Hoss's going any faster than 161 mph.
