How is it different from having your data normally in hard disks?

a virtual drive is taking all or part of another drive and making it appear to your machine as another real drive.
it is virtual in that it's generally not a distinct thing by itself, but it functions just like a real drive to your computer so things work normally.

an example might be to take a subdirectory and map that as another drive on your machine. when you go to the new location (drive letter in windows) it looks like the entire drive is the subdirectory. this technique is often used to simplify the paths to files, by making it possible to refer to a short (single letter) base that represents a much larger path so you don't have to keep typing the base part of the path each time.

virtual drives act like DVD or CD hardware your computer have
however they are software controlled. and physically not present

you can however see the drives in your 'my computer'
and instead of using discs, you use images like *.iso to mount into the virtual drive, they will then read them as if reading a real disc.

one such software is DAEMON TOOLS

Its a software which allows you to play a game or something else without a cd. you dont every time need to use the cd again and againn to use the application
