Great Britain was at war with the United States. The was gutted, leaving only the exterior walls standing. Popular legend holds that during the rebuilding of the structure white paint was applied to mask the burn damage it had suffered, giving the building its trafitional colour. This is, however, incorrect as the building had been painted white since its construction in 1798. Of the numerous objects taken from the White House when it was ransacked by British troops, only two have been recovered — a portrait of George Washington, rescued by then-first lady Dolley Madison, and a jewellery box returned to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1939 by a Canadian who said his grandfather had taken it from Washington. Much of the booty was lost when a convoy of British ships led by HMS Fantome sank en route to Halifax off Prospect during a storm on the night of 24 November 1814.

WRONG...the british didn't burn down the white house....it was Mrs. O'leary's cow that knocked over a lantern in the rose room.
"Barbie" was the presidential cow in those days and had "Roaming Rights" throughout the White House, her milk was only for the presidential family.
A drunk british soldier was walking by, and shot a rifle into the air....scaring "Barbie"..."Barbie" jumped and knocked over the lantern.....that night Poor "Barbie" was roasted in the fire....Thus the first American Bar-B-Que took place....it is now a rich tradition in America.
