Dating back to 1400 BC, the Oracle of Delphi was the most important shrine in all Greece, and in theory all Greeks respected its independence. Built around a sacred spring, Delphi was considered to be the omphalos - the center (literally navel) of the world.

People came from all over Greece and beyond to have their questions about the future answered by the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo. And her answers, usually cryptic, could determine the course of everything from when a farmer planted his seedlings, to when an empire declared war.

Delphi is perhaps best-known for the oracle at the sanctuary of Apollo. In the last quarter of the 8th Century BC we see a steady increase of artifacts found at the settlement site in Delphi. Pottery and bronze work and tripod dedications continue in a steady stream, in comparison to Olympia. Neither the range of objects nor the presence of prestigious dedications proves that Delphi was a focus of attention for worshippers of a wide range, but the strong representation of high value goods are found in no other mainland sanctuary, certainly encourages that view.

The priestess of the oracle at Delphi was known as the Pythia.

Delphi is located on a plateau on the slope of Mount Parnassus, adjacent to the Sanctuary of Apollo, the site of the ancient Apollonian Oracle. This semicircular spur is known as Phaedriades, and overlooks the Pleistos Valley. Southwest of Delphi, about 15 km away, is the harbor-city of Kirrha on the Corinthian Gulf.

The site also held a tempet to Apollo. The Oracle was a woman who was consulted about the future. She was also called the Pythia. She was belived to have been seated on a tripod, seated behind a bariier were petioners came and asked their questions.

Delphi is in Greece.

The oracle was a woman who would lit in a cave and inhale toxic fumes from a vocalnic vent, then come out into the public square, stand on a rock and prophecy the future.

It's from ancient Greece. Delphi was a town/city in Greece where the Oracle would foretell the future and tell you the meaning of signs (the ancient equivalent of a fortune teller). It doesn't exist anymore, but it's in many Greek plays that you can still read about.

Delphi is a town in Indiana. The local high school uses the mascot "The Oracles".

Yes, I know that's not what is being asked, but others are doing that well enough. :-)

The site:
Delphi (del'fī) [key], locality in Phocis, Greece, near the foot of the south slope of Mt. Parnassós, c.6 mi (10 km) northeast of the port of Cirrha. It was the seat of the Delphic oracle, the most famous and most powerful of ancient Greece. The oracle originated in the worship of an earth-goddess, and later legend ascribed it to Gaea.

Delphi was unique in its universal position in the otherwise fragmented political and social life of Greece. It was the meeting place of the Amphictyonic league (see amphictyony), the most important league of Greek city-states, and also the site of the Pythian games. Persons seeking the help of the oracle brought rich gifts, and the shrine grew very wealthy. The prestige and influence of the Delphic oracle prevailed for centuries through all of Greece

Delphi is located in central greece. in ancient times people went there to seek guidance and answers. it turned out though that the women that told the future and gave advice were actually intoxicated by fumes that came from the burning of a certain kind of plant.
