To everyone who answered the question about my baby ballpython, thank you!!! I went out and bought him a heating pad, a red light for at night, a tree (that he staysin all the time now) and he is living on coconut. He ate his mouse yesterday, I think he may have been too cold. The issue is, I went to the store to buy all his stuff and they told me that if you feed him live animals that he will be agressive later. I have small children and while he is not big enough to harm them now, I don't want him to later.

Frozen or Fresh??

Feeding a snake live food, won't make him aggressive, however live food will make some humans aggressive.

None herp folks get a bit touchy on this subject to say the least. Also there is a strong debate among the herp folks about live feeding.

While live food is normal, having live food and a snake in a restricted area isn't.

The danger is to the snake!!! A mouse can injure your snake.

There are two ways to deal with this, best is dead either fresh kill or frozen. Most folks prefer mouse/rat pops (frozen). You can get good quality, lower price and don't have to go through the process of humanly killing dinner.

If the guy simply refuses to eat dead, no matter what. Toss dinner in (live), and supervise. If he hasn't eaten it with in 15 minutes, remove the mouse, and offer again the next day. NEVER leave dinner with him unsupervised!

Tip for frozen dinner, thaw to at least room temperature, better yet dip in warm water or chicken broth to raise temperature to about 100F.

no. BUT as far as feeding DO take every precaution...never handle the food then him without washing thoroughly - if he smells food and is hungry it's easy for him to react on smell.

don't leave live food in the tank with him - more than one snake has died when the prey became the predator.

my sister had a burmese 10-12' around her toddler - the snake had never done any harm to him. She did pay attention to the food handling though and the kids didn't ever handle her when she was getting ready to shed.

The same kind of people saying live food is bad also say raw food makes dogs vicious and that isn't true either.

Feeding a python a rodent will not make it aggressive. It is nature. Wait untill the python is a bit older to go fresh because mice will put up a fight and I would get advice elsewhere as well. Snakes are snakes....And they constrict out of nature, so it would be wise to not leave small children around a loose snake unsupervised.

no. the live food will not make him aggressive. But use caution when feeding that you do mot allow the snake to start associating your hand with the food. This can cause him to bite your hand not out of aggression but out of hunger. I personally dont allow my snakes to see me putting their food in so that it never becomes an issue. P.S. my snakes refuse to eat anything but live.

Do not worry a python will never attack you or your children if he is well nourished or feel himself in total security.Feeding him with living animals or dead animals will not influence his aggressivity make sure that you or your children never afraid as he can attack you for his own protection but not to eat you
