Firstly and most importantly it improves the overall psychological and mental state of a person. It relaxes some facial muscles and widens blood vessels that help blood flow better and benefit the physical and mental health.
I am sure it also increases one's popularity and thus improves his/her social state.

I am not sure what the benefits are aside from feeling better, but people use more facial muscles when frowning than they do with smiling.

Infer what you will, but I think smiling makes you feel better and will probably cause less wrinkles, unless you don't like laugh lines.

When you smile you feel better then when your frowning. Also when you smile, you could make someone else smile. A smile can be a miracle. You could be walking down the street and you see a stranger; they may be having the worst day and your smile could brighten their day. Amazing something that takes such little effort could change the way you feel and others.

Research has shown that we use fewer muscles to smile than to frown. Also that when we smile we release a chemical that makes us feel better (so if you feel sad, just smile and you'll feel better, though laughing makes you feel even better). And from practical experience, a smiling person is seen as a friendlier person and so approachable, easier to talk with, maybe nicer. An always frowning businessperson isn't going to make customers feel like busying from his/her store.

To see others attempt to mimic you is great. You can worm yourself out of a paper bag if your smile is sincere enough.
You may save another life because of one small gesture.
The greatest reason that I smile is because I am so fat that people look at my smile rather than my stomach.
Gotta love me, I am somebodies grandma who carries a smile always.

Social psychology research bears out that facial expressions do reflect our inner feelings, and changing our facial expression can help to change our feelings too. Behavioral Science studies indicate a high positive correlation between humor and immune system benefits.
