I would go for HP's and Compaq's (yes i know they are pretty much the same thing now) but I would defiantly stay away from the HP Pavilions and Compaq Persarios. Dell has some of the best customer service out there, but truefully to me they are yet to make a machine that I liked. For the most part unless you are a hardcore gamer I would stay away from consumer lines of pcs, and get a business line or workstation class system, they might cost alittle bit more but they are alot more stable systems and you are much less likely going to be sending it in for warrenty repairs in 2 months.

IBM or Apple are the highest rated. Hp/Compaq Customer service sucks its pretty lowly rated so is Sony and Gateway (but not as low as Hp/Compaq) But personally Brand is nothing (hardware wise) cause no mater what brand you buy its the same parts. The only thing you pay for is the service and more often or not you are our own best techsuport so in alota cases all manufactures are only good for building the Pcs.

The money that you spend on a retail computer will get you twice the performance and features if you build your own. There are also on-line computer electronics suppliers that can give you a way better deal than going to a store and getting a big name brand. With the savings, you can get video cards that support two (or even four!) monitors or some extra memory. TigerDirect.com is where I've always shopped...they have everything (just stay away from the emachines and ignore the 'rebates').. Take a look...

I have a Gateway that's 7 years old and still kicks @ss...but then again, I don't need customer service...get a Dell if you're poor, an HP if you got a little bit, or get a WidowPC if you're loaded...

Best brand? DIY brand. You can also be sure the quality is great since you made it (unless you don't care about quality.).
Much cheaper too.
For the higher end systems however, there are Dell/Alienware and Falcon Northwest and others. Everything else is just average. I'll go with an HP, and maybe Dell.

I suggest waiting until Windows Vista (new year, 2007) before buying a new computer. But if you have to choose, I chose HP for their excellent integration and help. Dell also works, but there's a price for all that modification.

When you own a GateWay, you essentially own a Dell, HP, and a Compaq. They are all on equal ground. Just depends on how well you take care of them. :)

I build my own, but I recommend Dell to other people, depending on what they want and their budget etc. Dell support is very good, and there's only been one hardware problem one of the people I recommended had. His laptops cd drive suddenly failed on him, so he phoned them up and they told him how to disconnect it (must be a switch underneath), and said they'd send a brand new one to him by courier, sure enough next day the new cd drive came, they got swapped over, and everythings back to normal.
