Heck if I know. I just moved from there last year after living in Cali for about 8 years. I lived at Seal Beach and it was always cold. June gloom from hell all the time. I went to the beach maybe three times even though it was only two blocks from my house. It's movies like American Pie that make people think that. I saw the strip on seal beach in that movie and people were walking and riding around on bikes in bikinis. That doesn't happen on a daily bases there in real life. They would freeze.

Because that's the way California has always been stereotyped - hippies, surfers, etc. The Beach Boys and those other 60's-70's groups who wrote California songs basically set the scene for it.

Movies play a big part in that. Stop and think about a movie based in Cali. The two things that you are garanteed to see a beach and surfing.

Stereotypes. Think of all the shows about California and how the media portrays Californians.

Baywatch.
The OC.
90210.

All of these shows featured mainly casts that were mainly white, beach loving, bikini wearing, sun worshiping, water dwellers, that have surfboards on top of their cards or taking up serious space somewhere in their dorm rooms.

The only focus on the coastlines, never on the rest of us...

For the same reason people assume that:

All Texans are cowboys
All New Yorkers are rude
All Mexicans are illegal

Because it's easier to assume a generalization than to take the time to research something.

Because Cali has a thousand miles of beachfront. I mean, don't you assume that everyone from Indiana is a simpleton? Some generalizations just make sense.

Could it be the same reason people assume people from Hawaii are surfers and live in grass shacks? ^_^

Stereotyping is so hard to erase sometimes.
