Chuck Palhaniuk, you would probably know of him as the writer of Fight Club but that was only his first book. He's written many other great books, most of which have been optioned for movies. His second book was about a guy who hijacks a plane and tells his life story in the cockpit so it can be recorded on the black box. They were going to make it into a movie until nineteen jackasses decided to hijack four planes and crash them into a few buildings. After that movies about plane hijackings were thought to be in bad taste.

Charles Williams. He was one of the Inkilngs, the writer's group that JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis also belonged to.
His novel _Descent into Hell_ is staggering, working with ideas of social and personal responsibility on a level that no one else approaches. It's also incredibly well written -- my nomination for greatest novel in the English language.
