Programming languages are the "swiss army knife" of computer scientists. In almost any area of Computer Science (and actually far beyond), ideas and concepts are expressed in terms of a language. If sentences expressed in such a language are executable by a computer, they are called programs, and the language is then called a programming language. Of course, there are many different special kinds of programming languages that run under different names, such as scripting languages, query languages, configuration languages, transformation languages, and so on. In some cases these languages might lack certain aspects of general-purpose programming languages like Java or Haskell, or they might offer specialized abstractions for their particular problem domain (languages of this kind are also called domain-specific languages), but in principle, all these languages are programming languages in the sense that it is possible to write programs (scripts, queries, ...) that can be compiled (or interpreted) and finally executed by a computer.

Hope this helps.
