microsoft word is an example.

any program that is made to act like a typewriter... you can change the font and sometimes add logos or pictures but nothing else, really.

Word Processing programs are programs to help you writing whether a letter, a report, a fax, ...etc
Famous word processing programs are MS Word and WordPerfect.
Via this programs, You can write, edit, make a spelling and grammatical checks, insert pictures and graphs to your document.

It allows you to type text, edit it, spell-check it (most do), format it, and print it.
