the ones that are cartoons?? really...how can they be hot? of course i've seen some really ugly ones!

I think it's just because they are looking for attention or want to try to boost their self esteem. However, you can hardly directly relate a little cartoon with your actual self.
Waste of time if you ask me.

I cannot understand how people can get so wrapped up in these miniscule cartoon drawings. They are only about 2 centimeters square, they don't look at all like real people, and the choices they give you are so limited there's no way you can individualize them to the point of uniqueness. I have only been here for about 5 weeks, and already they all seem to look the same. Which, i guess, is why so many people are using their own pictures, drawings, or whatever. At least you have some chance of individuality that way.

Because some people are just dumb... It's a cartoon people! Get self-esteem some other way but through a cartoon!

They have designed it to look like themselves and are looking for feedback. They might be fishing for compliments or seeking advice.
It is like answering a question from your wife or girlfriend "does my butt look big in this dress". We guys know that there is only one practical answer to that which is no.

Ummm...that's "avatar," not "aviator."
Yahoo doesn't offer very realistic ones. I'd like one that really looks more like me. (And if it DID, then it most definitely would NOT be "cute," because I'm old and fat.)
