or did Clark Kent still work at the Daily Planet, but just stopped assuming the role of superman. from my understanding, Superman/Clark left the earth and went to space/fortress or wherever to ponder life; it would be suspicious if superman returns, and then oh look, clark kent has returned as well.

Superman went to find the remains of Krypton, because it had been reported that NASA scientists had found Krypton. When he got there, it turned out that Krypton was a "grave yard". It took him 2 1/2 years to get to the remains of Krypton and 2 1/2 years to return to earth.
The scenes of Superman visiting the remains of Krypton, will probably end up on the DVD, but they were cut from the final film.
Superman asked his mother to send post cards to Lois as Clark Kent, so it would appear that Clark is still on earth, but no longer in Metropolis.

No, Superman went to visit his old destroyed planet Krypton because there are news that some or half of the planet survived when it's sun went supernova. But it takes him 2 years to travel there, a year to stay there and wonder around, and 2 years to go back. Clark Kent's excuse was he went to see the world and broaden his horizons. Clark actually had his mother write some postcards from different places to his co-workers and friends so that it would not become obvious that he left at the same time Superman vanished.

Superman went to his birth home Planet Krypton.When Superman went back to Earth everything was VERY different.Lois Lane Got married and had a child.Lois Lane did not know that her son was Superman/Clark Kent's son.The little boy pushed a piano that was a right piano or something.It revealed that the boy has super strength.

Clark Kent and Superman were both gone for five years. We all know that Superman went to where his supposedly "home planet Krypton" was. We saw how Lois reacted when he saw Clark in the movie. She asked how's his "vacation."

Clark Kent was gone as well. I mean if Superman left to see about Krypton, then obviously Clark was gone too. Clark comes back to the Daily Planet and Jimmy Olsen fills him on Lois being a mom. Lois also welcomes Clark back and he meets the kid.

the only time clark gave up his superman identity was in an earth two story where the wizard magically get rid of superman but he shows up as clark with no memory of superman so hes not so mild mannered and lois falls for him and they get married
in the movie clark like in the first movie he shows up first
