Put a normal layer of unthinned latex over the subject you wish to make a mold . Have a seperate batch of latex with saw dust mixed in. This bulks it up and saves you money. The first layer(s) should not have any saw dust in it because the saw dust detracts from the latex's ability to get fine details.

As far as I know you can use any thickener you would use for cooking like flour or corn starch, mix it with a little boiling water to make a paste, then it won't be lumpy and will mix better with the liquid latex.
