People refuse to accept differences and thus tend to not accept others into their "group". This is a common thread through many cultures, and has different aspects such as prejudice and just plain not getting along. Different tribes of Native Americans for example called their own tribe "the people" and didn't think of the other tribes in the same way. It's this wall put up against the feared different people that don't fit into our understanding of ways we think we ought to behave, that causes wars, separations of nations, and racism, versus the overcoming of these differences to accept us as human.

Because people have mutually exclusive worldviews. Suppose one person wants to live in a world where any woman can have an abortion for any reason. While a second person wants to live in a world where abortion is illegal and would draw harsh legal punishment. The world can not be both ways at one time.
Our desires are not limited to personal desires that do not affect other people. We have desires about how other people should act and think. With billions of people on the Earth, there are going to be conflicting desires.
