Below is the link to the SS site. They have a link on the home page on how to apply for benefits. I think you have to be at least 62, but I think there are a few execeptions - like if your spouse was 62+ and died, even if your under 62 you would still collect.

Okay, from personal experience, you have to get the best doc (possibly a rheumatologist or internal medicine doc) that you can find that will document your every ache, pain and symptom and be willing to fight for you. You don't need an attorney yet. You can't get SS benefits unless you have been off work for at least 6 months. File for SS benefits at the end of 5 months. You might be eligible for SSI benefits to help you until your SS benefits come thru. Or try filing for medicaid to help you out. You will probably be denied from SS the 1st time, but refile. Call them (1st time too) and make them take the info over the phone because "you are too sick to get to their office". Make copies of everything you fill out and sign to keep for yourself so you don't forget what you said. If you are denied the 2nd time, it will go to hearing and that is when you will need the attorney. If you get one before that, you will just end up giving them money that could be your's that you will need. If you can't afford an attorney, go to the legal aid dept. in your county to see if you can get a good one who will fight to get you your benefits. If you don't look sick which is the case with FM and CFS, people don't want to believe you are sick. They also consider the psychiatric evaluation as very important. If you are feeling okay on the day of any of your appointments, you may have to posture because even though it's a good day, we know how many bad days we have. Go to the SSA website and look up the info for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It should help you with your claim for FM. Also, check out the websites I've include for FM. They might be able to help you. If you ever do get your SS disability benefits, you will be questioned every 3 years by them to see how you are doing until you are 62 or 65. They will also try to get you into a rehabilitation program. Tell them you are not well enough to do that at this time. I have a VERY GOOD CFS DOC!

good question, but i don't think u can if ur able to work! not fair in ur case.
if ur not able to work, get it in drs. writing and file with ss office. they almost always deny the first time, but u can appeal. u can hire an atty then, or do it on ur own. u will get back pay from the date u filed.
dunno if that helps, and i'm sorry to hear ur having such a hard time on this! life's just not fair at times!
