This is almost a toss up... but I've got over a decade of experience with Hondas and all of it good. Couple that with the fact that the entire field of IRL (Indy Racing League) cars feature nothing but Honda engines and I think the answer is getting obvious.
Plus, Honda is proud of their engineering and willing to give all the information to the public on each of their models. Go to www.helminc.com and you will be able to buy the individual service manuals for your Hondas or Acuras. These manuals give explicit detail on how to care for your car from the ground up. They are worth their weight in gold and far surpass Chilton or Motor manuals.
I find OEM Honda parts all over the internet and aftermarket replacements are readiliy available at AutoZone or Napa Auto Parts as well. Yes, Honda OEM parts are expensive but then each one gives you over 100,000 miles of reliable service! That's the cheapest expensive part I've ever bought!
Honda Si's have a lot of pep and will have no trouble with get up and go but then they do get at least 35 mpg too. The VTEC engines are one heck of a lot of fun and will flat out fly when you put your foot into it. Downshifting from 5th to 3rd and putting the pedal to the metal will make that VTEC come alive while average daily driving keeps the horses tame and the fuel in the tank longer. Improvements in horse power can be had but fuel economy will suffer and at almost $3/gal who can afford that anymore? Heck, Jackson Racing makes drop in, street legal, superchargers for Hondas... how much more can someone want?
I think the Accord is a bigger car than the Golf so it should hold more or at least be more comfortable too.
Sorry VW... my vote goes to Honda.

Accord. Hondas have great engines across the board in every kind of thing they make and they last forever.
Definitely get internet bids instead of going into a dealer. Much cheaper.

Yeah I'm gonna have to say Golf. Honda's are pretty damn reliable,Volks are too though plus they pack a punch. You need to trick out a Honda to get any horsepower out of it.

golf...if you have to have one of the two...accords are horrible. if a honda breaks it is impossible to get it fixed under warranty...they will give you the run around like you would never think.

v.w. is plagued with electrical and engine management faults,. this has been going on for years. coupled with the crappy plastic that sun- bakes into brittle nothing in very short order. these cars should have gone the way of Renault and left America. people still buy them and i will continue to send my kid to college off of v.w. repair bills .
GET THE HONDA
